Power Station Buying Guide: What Size Do You Need?
How to calculate your power needs and choose the right portable power station for your situation.
Portable power stations range from pocket-sized phone chargers to whole-home backup systems. Choosing the right one comes down to understanding your actual power needs. Here's how to figure it out.
Step 1: List What You Need to Power
Write down every device you plan to run and its wattage. You can usually find this on the device label or manual. Common examples:
- Smartphone: 10-25W
- Laptop: 50-100W
- Mini fridge: 60-100W
- CPAP machine: 30-60W
- LED lights: 10-30W each
Step 2: Calculate Your Total Watt-Hours
Multiply each device's wattage by how many hours you need to run it. Add them all up. For example, running a 60W mini fridge for 8 hours = 480Wh. Add a laptop at 80W for 4 hours = 320Wh. Total: 800Wh.
Step 3: Add a Safety Buffer
Always add 20-30% to your total. Inverters aren't 100% efficient, and you don't want to drain the battery to 0%. For our 800Wh example, look for at least a 1000Wh unit.
Step 4: Consider Expandability
Some power stations let you add extra battery packs later. If your needs might grow, this is worth paying for upfront.
Step 5: Check the Output Ports
Make sure the station has the right outlets for your devices — AC outlets, USB-A, USB-C, and 12V car ports. Also check the maximum simultaneous output if you'll run multiple devices at once.
Quick Rule of Thumb: For emergency home backup (fridge + lights + phone charging), look for 1000-2000Wh. For camping or tailgating, 300-500Wh is usually enough. For whole-home backup, you'll need 3000Wh+ or an expandable system.
